Amendments to building by-laws have been proposed by the government recently to boost the growth of electric vehicles in the country. As per the proposal, electric vehicle charging stations should be made mandatory in residential and commercial buildings as well as parking lots.
The move is in line with the government¡¯s target of shifting to the electric fleet for 30 per cent of the total vehicles on road by 2030. Along with the compulsion of round the clock charging stations, the draft by Town and Country Planning Organisation proposes setting up charging bays at 20% capacity of all vehicles, on-spot metering as well as payment services in both commercial and residential buildings.
Once passed, the said proposals will be applicable to residential complexes, institutional buildings, multi-level parkings, bus terminals and service stations. For the same, the proposal also mentions an increased electricity load for buildings.

The draft has been formed under the ministry of housing and urban affairs and is expected to act as a huge uplift to the EV scenario in the country. To date, not many automakers have ventured into the market of four-wheeler EVs in the country citing the lack of a proper ecosystem for the same, including charging stations and incentives for the production.
There have been attempts by several state governments though, like the recent visit to China by Delhi Transport officials to understand the working of electric buses in the country. Propelling electric vehicles on both the fronts - public as well as personal use is the need of the hour and such steps will go a long way in making the shift to the cleaner alternative.
