Dr Tommy Korn MD is an ophthalmologist in the San Diego Area of California. He tweeted about a recent incident that occurred while he was out at a restaurant. Apparently, one of the diners keeled over during dinner. Of course, there wasn't an ECG machine nearby to check his heart, so Korn improvised.
He took off his Apple Watch Series 4 and slapped it on the patient's wrist, which let him quickly detect and irregularity. The patient was suffering from atrial fibrillation, which is when the heart beats at an irregular and often elevated rhythm.
AFib is a condition that often goes undiagnosed, right up until the moment it becomes deadly, because sufferers don't experience any symptoms beforehand. It can increase your risk of heart failure, strokes, and a myriad other cardiac disorders.
As a physician, it¡¯s much faster to put my #applewatch4 on someone else¡¯s wrist to detect ?? disease (A. fib) than finding a ECG machine at a public restaurant! ? (Indeed, a true #mhealth guardian) pic.twitter.com/JLVD4JUYI9

However, the Apple Watch was able to detect the patient's heart rate, thus giving Dr Korn vital data to work with, without which he might not have been able to act quickly enough to save the patient.
Because of his quick actions however, the patient was saved and reportedly doing fine later.
