Was Elon Musk Right? Internal Documents Show Twitter's Losing Its Heaviest Users
According to internal documents seen by Reuters, Twitter is struggling to retain its most active users. This report comes in right before Elon Musk's deadline to close the $44 billion deal to buy Twitter.
In April this year, Elon Musk asked a question - "Is Twitter dying?" Five days later, he offered to buy the social media platform, one of the biggest in the world.
But is Twitter really dying? According to internal documents seen by Reuters, Twitter is struggling to retain its most active users. This report comes in right before Elon Musk's deadline to close the $44 billion deal to buy Twitter.
Most engagement on Twitter is driven by "heavy tweeters." While they account for only 10% of monthly overall users, they're responsible for 90% of all Tweets and about half of Twitter's global revenue.
Where did the Tweeters go?
Since the Covid-19 pandemic began, heavy tweeters have been in "absolute decline." A Twitter researcher asked in an internal document - "Where did the Tweeters go?"

Twitter is also noticing a shift in the kind of content that flourishes on the platform, which, in turn, could be changing the interest landscape of tweeters. For English-speaking users, cryptocurrency and not-safe-for-work (NSFW) content are the highest-growing topics of interest on Twitter.
Most of these ¡°top¡± accounts tweet rarely and post very little content.

At the same time, users are losing interest in news, sports, and entertainment.

In the internal study, Twitter investigated "disturbing" trends that remained buried due to overall growth in Twitter's daily users. The company wanted to understand why its most active users are now declining. Even then, the study has made no conclusions about why chronic tweeters are no longer tweeting.
