iPhone 15 Leak Suggests USB-C Is Coming, Lightning Cables To Become Obsolete
An EU mandate recently made the inclusion of USB Type-C compulsory on smartphones, and probably pushed Apple to make this choice as well
Goodbye, Lightning connector on iPhone! According to new leaks, the iPhone 15 series is getting USB Type-C after months of rumours and speculation. Apple will launch its latest iPhones in September, as is customary for the company.
An EU mandate recently made the inclusion of USB Type-C compulsory on smartphones, and probably pushed Apple to make this choice as well. If you upgrade to iPhone 15, your Lightning cables would become obsolete, it seems.
iPhone 15 to get USB-C
The leaked images were spotted on X (formerly Twitter). Two users shared a picture of USB Type-C charging port on the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. While the images were shared by two different users, they look the same.

These USB Type-C ports aren't seen attached to any iPhone, and neither of the users have a track record of sharing iPhone leaks. Even then, it's likely that the upcoming generation of iPhones will come with a USB Type-C port.
Owing to EU's decision on making a common charging port mandatory, Apple could have been compelled to make the switch. Earlier, it wasn't clear if non-EU iPhone models would also get USB-C.

USB Type-C is definitely faster than Lightning ports and can help users stick to a single cord for all their devices. However, rumours from Apple's Made for iPhone (MFi) programme suggest that the company would add a verification chip to the iPhone 15's charging port to slow down speeds artificially in case a user is charging through a third-party accessory not part of the MFi programme. Strange, right?

Even then, Lightning ports are still going to stick around for a while through iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models. The Apple event is likely to take place on September 12 or 14.
