iPhone Will Finally Get USB Type-C, Confirms Apple
Joswiak made it clear however that Apple clearly wasn't happy about being legally forced into making this massive decision.
Apple has gone ahead and thrown in the towel in its fight against USB Type-C, revealing that upcoming iPhone models could sport USB Type-C connectors.
This is according to Apple's marketing lead Greg Joswiak and software VP Craig Federighi at the WSJ's Tech Live conference (reported first by The Verge).
During the conversation, WSJ's Joanna Stern asked if Apple would be replacing the proprietary Lightning connector after the new EU mandate for USB-C on all devices, to which Joswiak responded, "obviously we¡¯ll have to comply, we have no choice."

When asked on an ETA to expect USB-C on iPhones, Joswiak replied stating that the "Europeans were the ones dictating timing for European customers". To the unaware, the law has forced all phones and tablets to have USB-C. Joswiak also refused to reveal if the company will include USB-C only in the EU or even to phones sold outside.
Joswiak made it clear however that Apple clearly wasn't happy about being legally forced into making this massive decision. He revealed how Apple has often gone its own way and trusted engineers instead of being forced into adopting hardware standards by lawmakers.
He gave examples around compliances with Micro USB and hearing aids as instances where Apple was pushed to meet poorly-considered requirements.
He also highlighted that ever since bricks have started to come with detachable cables, most issue of standardisation has been solved, while also claiming that forcing iPhone from Lightning to USB-C could result in a lot of e-waste. Although as most of us can gauge, this justification isn't the most compelling.
