It's 2020 and ISRO is inching closer to the Gaganyaan mission. We¡¯ve already had some information of India¡¯s first manned space mission, however today, ISRO Chief K Sivan shed light on some more information on the mission at an event in Bengaluru.
Previous reports had revealed that it has planned two unmanned missions scheduled for this year with the GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) that will board a human-like robot to understand the kind of stress humans will experience on the spacecraft and make changes accordingly.
And today, ISRO has unveiled the humanoid robot that will embark on these missions -- meet Vyomitra.
Meet ISRO¡¯s Vyomitra
Vyomitra is a spacefaring humanoid robot that looks and talks like a human, while also conducting experiments aboard the rocket. Vyomitra is a half-humanoid robot as the robot only has the top half of the body, without any legs.
K Sivan stated, ¡°We are on schedule and we are going to do a lot of demonstration tests this year. After the demonstration test, we will conduct our first unmanned mission by this year-end. The half humanoid that you saw today is going to simulate the human systems to that understand how the human system will behave, how the life support system will behave. So that way the mission is on schedule.¡±
K Sivan: ¡°Indian Astronauts Will Fly In an Indian Module¡±
ISRO Chief K Sivan also shed light on some more key features on the advancement of Gaganyaan mission that is scheduled for sometime in 2022. He revealed that four Indian Air Force pilots have been shortlisted for the mission and will commence their training in Russia by the end of January.
ISRO/ AFPHe further stated, ¡°In 1984, Rakesh Sharma flew in a Russian module, but this time the Indian astronauts will fly in an Indian module from India.¡±
Work On Chandrayaan 3 has started
The space agency will conduct six microgravity experiments in the crew capsule during the two unmanned missions. K Sivan also spoke about the next Chandrayaan mission -- Chandrayaan 3 that is also on schedule stating, "The work on Chandrayaan-3 has started and it is going at full speed." Chandrayaan 3 will be having a lander and rover with propulsion module for a better landing on the Lunar surface.
The total budget of Chandrayaan-3 is also expected to be lesser than Chandrayaan-2, according to the government, even as a recent TOI report revealed that ISRO had asked for 75 crores more than the previously assigned budget for the Chandrayaan-3 mission.
