Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg isn't exactly everyone's favourite person. So when he posts something, people are just waiting to jump down his throat.
And yet, privacy violations aside, it's no reason to behave the way some Indians just did with his sister online.
Mark Zuckerberg/Facebook
Zuckerberg yesterday posted a congratulatory message to his sister Randi on Facebook for having won two Tony Awards for her Broadway musicals. Just a simple one-line message patting her on the back.
The Indians on the social network unfortunately were quick to raise their ugly heads and point out that her name is spelled exactly like an abhorrent cuss word.
Yup, they went there. For some reason, the Indian blokes just couldn't stop themselves from sniggering about what Randi's name means in Hindi. You know, despite the fact that they could have kept that knowledge to themselves and not gone on at length at her expense.
It should also come at no surprise that most of the comments were made by Indian boys. No, I don't care how old some of them may be, they were made by Indian boys -- not men. And those making fun of her name weren't even the worst of the comments there.
At the very least a few people spoke up, pointing out that the jokes were in very bad taste and unnecessary. All too few of them, but at least some.
Whether Indian or not, such comments are in extremely poor taste, and simply by association it brings a bad name for all of us Indians online. It's high time we started treating everyone with respect and elevated our discourse to some minimum level of decency.
