As Russia encircles and invades Ukraine as part of its so-called demilitarisation efforts, the tech editor at Forbes Ukraine, Mike Sapiton took it up on himself to highlight how Ukrainians have contributed to tech that is now mainstream and used by all. From WhatsApp to Grammarly, here are the six most well-known firms that were founded by Ukrainians.
The world's most well-known instant messaging app was founded by Ukrainian emigrant Jan Koum. Koum was born in Fastiv, from where he moved to the United States. Currently, WhatsApp is owned and operated by Facebook's parent company Meta.

PayPal
The global payment service that was one of the earliest ways to make digital payments was co-founded by Max Levchin, who is also an emigrant. In addition to co-founding PayPal, Levchin was an early investor in Yelp and is also credited as a producer for the hit film Thank You for Smoking.

An app to declutter and speed your Mac, Clean My Mac was developed by Kyiv-based Mac Paw. Founded in 2008, Mac Paw also offers VPN services and claims to solve "ten tasks with one tool."

Snapchat's masking tech
The masking technology used in Snapchat was created by Looksery, a company from Odessa in Ukraine. It was spearheaded by Yurii Monastyrshin, and the company has offices in both the United States and Ukraine. Do you like using filters on Snapchat? You have Looksery to thank.
Using @Snapchat? Well, the masking technology was brought by Looksery team, mostly stationed in Odessa and led by bright mind of Yuri Monastyrshin. Snap also have a huge office in Kyiv and Zaporizha.

Grammarly
Most people who deal with words on daily basis swear by Grammarly, a service dedicated to assist people with writing grammatically correct and error-free content. Grammarly is now valued at $13 billion and was founded by three Ukrainians - Max Lytvyn, Alex Shevchenko, and Dmytro Lider.
And let's not forget the elephant in the room. You all are checking you writing via @Grammarly. It's $13 bln company by now, and it was founded by three Ukrainians. Its largest dev office is still here, in Kyiv.
