There's Now A Fabric That Smells Nicer, Even As You Start Stinking In The Gym
Engineers in the University of Minho Portugal have created two unique ways of manufacturing cotton that starts releasing the fragrance of citronella when it comes in contact with sweat. The scientists have really thought out of the box or rather out of their nose for this. It is one fragrance the mosquitoes are most disgusted by so it acts as a mosquito repellent.
If you live in a humid city like Mumbai, one of the most annoying feelings is when you and your clothes get totally drenched in sweat. While dealing with sweat is one thing, what's more annoying is the stinky body odour that comes along with it. And having a deo or perfume handy isn't always possible.
What if our clothes would start releasing a pleasant fragrance as soon as you started to sweat? Yes, it sounds too good to be true, but what if I told you it is true and could soon be seen on clothes from your favourite brand?
Researchers have found a way for your clothes to exude a burst of fresh fragrance as soon as you start to sweat. A team of engineers in the University of Minho, Portugal have created two unique ways of manufacturing cotton that starts releasing the fragrance of citronella when it comes in contact with sweat. Their process was shared in ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces journal.
How did they manage to do this?
The scientists have really thought out of the box, (or rather out of their nose) for this. In the first method, they're using a protein that's found in a pig's snout, which helps in binding the scent molecules. Along with this, they attached a carbohydrate-binding molecule that helps in binding with cotton. In the second method, they've utilised fat-like liposomes instead of proteins from pig snouts to bind the refreshing fragrance to the fabric.
When the processed fabric comes in contact with sweat, the pig-snout protein fabric releases a burst of citronella fragrance. The liposome, on the other hand, releases its fragrance gradually at a slower pace.
And added bonus to infusing citronella fragrance to fabric, apart from bidding goodbye to stinky body odour is that it is one fragrance the mosquitoes are most disgusted by, so it acts as a mosquito repellent too!
