Sundar Pichai Wants To Make AI Safer, Wants Countries To Build Framework To Regulate AI
Sundar Pichai offered suggestions at the World Economic Forum to get more clarity and control on AI, and how it can make this world a better place.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is advancing at an unprecedented rate and with a dynamism that is really incomparable to any other field in tech.
ReutersThis has made much fear about AI that it can not only take human jobs but also be used for causing disharmony in people's lives while impacting their privacy, among other things. However, Sundar Pichai offered suggestions at the World Economic Forum to get more clarity and control on AI
A framework for AI
He urged authorities to create a framework in order to approach AI. He said, in a conversation with Klaus Schwab, ¡°AI is one of the most profound things we are working on as humanity; it¡¯s more profound than fire or electricity or any of the other bigger things we have worked on. It has tremendous positive sides to it, but it has real negative consequences.¡±
He synonymised the idea for the framework to working on climate change, urging the whole world to participate, stating, ¡°you can't get safety by just one company or country working on it - you need a global framework.¡±
AI and Facial recognition
He also spoke about the use of AI in the field of facial recognition stating, ¡°When you think about technologies like facial recognition, it can be used to benefit, it can be used to find missing people, but it can be used for mass surveillance.¡±
He further added, ¡°As democratic countries with a shared set of values, we need to build on those values and make sure when we approach AI, we are doing it in a way that serves society. And that means making sure AI doesn¡¯t have bias, that we build and test it for safety. We make sure that there is human agency, that it¡¯s ultimately accountable to people.¡±
AI and quantum computing
Today we have AI that can help detect cancer instantaneously, help speed up the most tedious process and with faster computing, it can only get better, helping in far more complex scenarios.
He spoke about the potential of artificial intelligence when fused with quantum computing and what it holds in store for us, ¡°With this, we can simulate nature better and we can better predict weather and climate change. They can make better batteries. It's very profound.¡±
He further added, "When I look at future, quantum will be the next big arsenal in the way of technology. We will need to work a lot. The combination of AI and quantum computing would be amazing. Also, quantum's combination with biology would present huge potential, but obviously we will have to be very careful."
He concluded by sharing his optimism for this common framework, hoping it will be positively adopted by all countries, "I think there will be common gravitational pull - regardless of who you are, because people will recognise the need of such a framework for the sake of peace and prosperity."
