Despite Bans, TikTok Is World's Top Downloaded App With Over 850 Million Downloads In 2020
According to Nikkei Asia, the popular short-video platform rose to fame for the first time since the survey was launched in 2018. This was despite the nationwide bans seen in several nations around the world, including India and Pakistan.
TikTok today has surpassed to become the most downloaded app in the world in the year 2020 according to renowned business journal Nikkei Asia, citing a global survey of app downloads.

According to Nikkei Asia, TikTok rose to fame for the first time since the survey was launched in 2018. This was despite the nationwide bans seen in several nations around the world, including India and Pakistan.
While Nikkei Asia hasn¡¯t really revealed the actual download figures in its report, AppTopia has revealed that TikTok managed to garner over 850 million downloads in December 2020, comparing that to Facebook which has around 540 million downloads.
The short video platform was first unveiled to the world by its creator, Bytedance in 2017 and in a matter of three years, it has managed to take down social media giants like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Facebook Messenger in the number of downloads not just across the world, but also the US where these competitive social media platforms hail from.
The same level of dominance is also seen in China, in TikTok¡¯s home ground where it is popularly known as Douyin, and takes first place in the number of users and downloads.

Excluding China, in Asia, TikTok held the second position in terms of total downloads, with Facebook retaining its first position.
The survey highlights that the total viewing time for TikTok in the US and UK is longer than for YouTube. The report also highlights that short video as a format is here to stay and will continue to attract attention.

The app grew in popularity in the US despite looming concerns over personal information shared with TikTok not being secure. In fact, in 2020, Former POTUS Donald Trump actually asked for its US operations to be sold or face an imminent ban.
Despite the controversy, the popularity for the app grew considerably during the pandemic, becoming the most downloaded not just in the US but also in Europe and South America. Biden administration has withdrawn the order but concerns still exist as a representative with Nikkei Asia highlighted that they¡¯re still not ready to go public in the US.
