We Want India To Surpass China In Mobile Manufacturing, Says Ravi Shankar Prasad
India¡¯s telecom and IT minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad has revealed at the FICCI AGM that it is now aiming to surpass China in the field of smartphone manufacturing, with the introduction of the lucrative production-linked incentive scheme to attract smartphone makers to manufacture their devices in India.
India, since the past few years, has been extensively focussing on making electronics in India to provide employment to the citizens of the nation while also upskilling them along the way. And this effort got a massive boost after COVID-19 caused major shutdowns in China.

After SARS CoV-2 broke out in China and spread across the world, several tech companies started to exit China, and look for setting up their manufacturing facilities elsewhere. Many looked for facilities in Vietnam, Thailand and some turned towards India.
And now, India¡¯s telecom and IT minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad has revealed at the FICCI AGM that it is now aiming to surpass China in the field of smartphone manufacturing, with the introduction of the lucrative production-linked incentive scheme to attract smartphone makers to manufacture their devices in India.
He revealed that he wants to make India a hub of other electronic products as well, using the same PLI scheme.

"We wanted India to become the second-largest mobile manufacturer in the world. Now I am pushing India to surpass China. That's my goal and I am very clearly defining it," Prasad said at the annual general meeting of industry chamber FICCI.
India claimed the second spot of the largest smartphone manufacturer in 2017. Moreover, the National Policy on Electronics 2019 has predicted an electronic manufacturing turnover of over Rs 26 lakh crores by the year 2025, out of which mobile phone segment will contribute Rs 13 lakh crores.
He also said that the PLI scheme will enable in propelling India¡¯s statue as an alternate manufacturing destination, ¡°PLI is designed to enable global champion companies to come to India and make Indian companies national champion."

India is already home to some of the major smartphone manufacturers in the world. Samsung has its largest smartphone manufacturing facility in Noida.
Xiaomi has its facilities in Bengaluru whereas Apple¡¯s contract manufacturers Wistron, Foxconn are already mankind phones in India with plans to expand the portfolio in the coming months.
