Zoom Data Breach: Over 5 Lakh Zoom Login Data Being Sold On Dark Web For Less Than Rupee
Recent reports have revealed that login details of over 5 lakh zoom users have been found on the dark web.
With the COVID-19 lockdown forcing us all to work from home, video conferencing has helped us bridge the communication gap with our colleagues.
Amidst this, one app that has become really popular is Zoom. And this popularity has made it a prime target for cybercriminals, well that and its poor privacy barriers.
Recent reports by Sunday Times have revealed that login details of over 5 lakh zoom users have been found on the dark web where it is being sold for as cheap as 1 pence each -- which is even less than a rupee.
As per the report, a cybersecurity intelligence company Cyble bought the data from a Russian speaking person through messaging app Telegram.
Zoom was soon made aware of this massive data breach, to which they¡¯ve issued an official statement, ¡°We continue to investigate, are locking accounts we have found to be compromised, asking users to change their passwords to something more secure, and are looking at implementing additional technology solutions to bolster our efforts.¡±
It further added, ¡°It¡¯s common for web services to be targeted by activity which involves bad actors testing large numbers of already compromised credentials from other platforms to see if they¡¯ve been re-used.¡±
For some reason, Zoom has been surrounded by controversies ever since it experienced a boom in users around the world. Last week it quietly confessed that it didn¡¯t have 300 million daily active users, instead, it has 300 million daily meeting participants -- the latter meaning that if a person was a part of four meetings in a day, he/she would be counted four times -- not what daily active users actually meant.
Post this correction, however, Zoom hasn¡¯t really revealed its daily active user numbers. In order to take a bite of Zoom¡¯s fame, Google and Microsoft made their video conferencing apps Google Meet and Microsoft Teams free for users.
