Dyson V15 Detect Made Me Feel Like A House-Cleaning Superhero From The Future
From the images online, that¡¯s what the vacuum cleaner truly looked like, something Power Rangers would use to take down monsters or something Tony Stark made in his laboratory.
House cleaning is a chore that some might find enjoyable, but most find it dreadful. I am from the latter category.
And my disinterest in cleaning doesn't just come from the fact that it¡¯s an arduous task, but also from the fact that the moment I inhale even a little dust, I end up sneezing multiple times -- so obviously the experience isn't as fun for me.
So when Dyson connected with me and asked me if I wanted to try out their latest and greatest vacuum cleaner -- the V15 Detect -- I was the least interested. But that changed when I actually saw what it looked like.
Straight out of a sci-fi movie
From the images online, that¡¯s what the vacuum cleaner truly looked like, something Power Rangers would use to take down monsters or something Tony Stark made in his laboratory. A strange-looking industrial design with pipes, a large handle and a trigger.
And this crazy-ness only got more intense when I got to actually hold it in my hands -- the large blaster-like cylinder collects the dust with a connector port for attaching various attachments. The entire thing had a decent heft to it too, even though it¡¯s entirely made of plastic.
The initial setup asked me to charge the device for a full 100 percent, which took a couple of hours, but after that, I was more than excited to truly test what it was capable of.
What¡¯s in the box
In the box, you¡¯re greeted with a bunch of attachments to help you clean all kinds of things -- you¡¯ve got two attachments for cleaning carpets -- one large and one small, and an anti-static attachment for cleaning the tiled floor (that also shows dust particles on the floor using lasers), two brush attachments one with soft and the other with hard nylon brushes for cleaning areas that might need some motivation.
An additional narrow attachment for reaching into tight spaces where your arm cannot. You also get an included wall mount to attach the vacuum cleaner when not in use and display it as the piece of art that it truly is.
Crazy suction power
I¡¯ve used a few vacuum cleaners in my 28 years of age, with the most recent one being a corded one by LG, which is crazy powerful too, albeit a little inconvenient to carry around with its bulk. However, Dyson¡¯s V15 Detect is generations apart from this, in terms of convenience and power.
It sports a 240 Air Watts motor that is also cold and silent. Using it to clean my felt headboard, the amount of minute dust it was able to collect through the otherwise clean-looking headboard was surprising. And this suction power was also evident while cleaning dusty fans full of dust mites.
The included ¡®wand¡¯ attachment allowed me to easily reach the fan, and while it did get a little heavy, it wasn¡¯t completely uncomfortable. Since the wand was firm like a PVC pipe and not bendy as seen in other vacuum cleaner pipes, it made the whole experience a lot more convenient.
Laser cleansing
The Laser Slim Fluffy Head cleaner had a neat trick up its sleeve -- a laser light would show dust particles that would otherwise miss the human eye, making sure no dust is left behind. And this feature worked way better than I predicted. It really makes you think how much our eyes don¡¯t really see.
Although there were times when the large cylindrical shape of the vacuum cleaner blocked me from entering tighter spaces, even with the low-profile attachment connected with the extended wand.
Power play
While there were four power modes -- Auto, Eco, Med and Full -- and each offered their power stamina, using it in Auto was the most power efficient. The internal sensor is smart enough to increase or decrease the level of power required based on the surface and particle type.
Using Auto mode I was easily able to get over 45 minutes of usage on a single charge, although your bandwidth could vary.
If you know that you¡¯re going to need the full power, switching to Full would make sense, although it would only give you around 15 minutes of usage before it requires charging.
Also, I would have loved to see a plug-in option during times when I really wanted to start cleaning, since the battery would take around three hours to fully charge, which was a lot.
The dust sensor
The Dyson V15 Detect also consists of a tiny piezo sensor that actually looks at the size of dust entering, and offers a bar graph on the kind of dust prevalent in your household.
It puts it into four categories -- greater than ten micrometres (allergens/pollen), greater than 60 micrometres (microscopic dust and skin flakes), greater than 180 micrometres (dust mites and fine sand) and lastly, greater than 500 micrometres (particles as large as sugar or fleas).
While many might find this feature useless, for someone who is always trying to stay away from pollen or other kinds of dust/allergen -- people suffering from asthma, sinusitis or other forms of dust allergies -- since this offers a good glimpse into what¡¯s really entering the household and if any measures can be taken to reduce or cease its existence in the room.
Anti-tangle suction comb
Hair and vacuum cleaner attachments don¡¯t have a great relationship -- most end up getting stuck in the nylon bristles of the brush and eventually, you have to end up pulling it by hand, and that¡¯s not a fun experience.
However, Dyson V15 Detect has introduced an Anti-tangle suction comb that effortlessly sucked all the hair on the floor -- human or pet hair -- and it did so while keeping the whole attachment look as clean as new. In my experience, I didn't have even a single day where I had to pull hair out manually from the attachment, which is truly revolutionary.
Dispensing trash like a boss
Dispensing trash using the Dyson V15 Detect is even cooler than collecting it. A tiny lever extends and opens up the front section which allows all the dust to fall out completely. It definitely made me feel like I was reloading a shotgun.
And while the dust release action wasn¡¯t as effective -- some dust did end up flying upwards in my case and the bin required some manual cleaning using a microfibre cloth, it felt worth it.
Should you buy the Dyson V15 Detect?
Dyson V15 Detect is a solid companion that can make home cleaning not feel like a chore. It¡¯s loaded with some of the latest and greatest tech along with a phenomenal 240 Air-Watt motor and an industrial design that only betters its efficiency.
It surely has some flaws, pertaining to the long charging speeds or with a slightly bulky design that can block access to tight spaces. But when you look at its overall performance, these issues don¡¯t matter as much.
At the price tag of Rs 62,900, it definitely is a premium product. However, if you¡¯re in the market to buy the best vacuum cleaner there is, and money is no bar, Dyson V15 Detect pretty much hits it out of the park.
All this, with a complete accidental damage protection for two years, (which is also applicable for its other cordless offerings), it doesn't really get better than this.
