OnePlus 8 Pro Is A True Flagship That Impresses With Its Blazing Fast Speed
OnePlus 8 Pro is the fastest OnePlus device, but it's also the most expensive.
After a long delay due to COVID-19 lockdown, slowly and steadily OnePlus finally unveiled the OnePlus 8 Pro in the Indian market.
The OnePlus 8 Pro is hands down the fastest OnePlus device you will ever use till date, but it's also the most expensive ever.
The OnePlus 8 Pro also debuts in the true flagship segment now competing with the likes of Apple iPhone, Samsung Galaxy S, Google Pixel and others, and offers enough value to be worthy of competing against all others and even winning on various features.
Let¡¯s check out whether OnePlus 8 Pro truly is worthy of its hefty price tag of Rs 54,999.
What I Liked
Display
The device features a curved 6.7-inch AMOLED display which OnePlus calls Fluid AMOLED. This is a quad-HD panel with a resolution of 1440x 3168 pixels with a pixel density of 513ppi.
The display panel on the OnePlus 8 Pro has to be one of the best OnePlus has ever used and it looks beautiful, to say the least.
The colours were very accurate and punchy with great viewing angles. The top left has a punch-hole camera as opposed to a full-screen arrangement in the 7TPro. Also gone is the pop-up camera.
Even in bright outdoors the display doesn¡¯t disappoint and the symmetrical chin and forehead border, sort of complements the overall look.
OnePlus 8 Pro: 120Hz refresh rate
This is also a 120Hz panel as opposed to the 90Hz on its predecessor, that too with QHD resolution on. This makes for the whole user experience to feel butter smooth.
In case you wish to save battery you do get the option to switch back to 60Hz. However, we would have loved to see a 90Hz mode included too, for a sweet middle ground.
OnePlus 8 Pro: Flagship-grade performance
OnePlus has always made sure to add the best of hardware in its devices and the 8Pro is no different.
We¡¯re looking at Qualcomm¡¯s Snapdragon 865 octa-core processor paired with 8GB/12GB RAM. Paired with OxygenOS, the device was snappy to boot and didn¡¯t jitter or lag even for a moment.
While gaming too the device didn¡¯t break a sweat. I got to try Fortnite on the 120Hz panel and boy the experience was truly amazing.
The device did manage to get hot when playing for a considerable amount of time, but nothing that will make you uncomfortable.
OnePlus 8 Pro: Battery performance
Powering the OnePlus 8 Pro phone is a decent 4510mAh battery. The device also supports WARP charging -- both wired as well as wireless. We didn¡¯t get to test the wireless Warp Charging as I didn¡¯t have the proprietary charger around, but the conventional WARP charging still works like a charm.
For battery life, I easily got a full day¡¯s use -- this includes constantly getting texts, emails as well as late-night browsing. I could easily stretch to a day and a half, even more with resolution and refresh rate lowered.
OnePlus 8 Pro: Camera features
OnePlus 8 Pro¡¯s camera module might look similar to its predecessor, but it has a bunch of new optics that capture some really good images.
We¡¯ve got a 48-megapixel primary shooter with Laser AF and OIS, a secondary 8-megapixel telephoto shooter with OIS and 3x zoom, a tertiary 48-megapixel ultra-wide shooter and a 5-megapixel depth sensor.
With COVID-19 lockdown in place, I didn¡¯t get much chance to get out and capture images the way I wanted but with the time I got to spend with OP8 Pro¡¯s camera,
I was thoroughly impressed with the kind of images the phone was able to capture during the day time.
I liked the fact that OnePlus included a higher-resolution camera for wide-angle that helped in capturing detailed wide-angled shots.
The camera also has a macro mode, however, for me it didn¡¯t work the way I wanted it to, with the texture getting softer.
The camera however also excelled in capturing low-light images with its ¡®Nightscape¡¯ mode on. And the shots didn¡¯t disappoint.
For selfies, you get a 16-megapixel selfie shooter which was alright too. I did notice a slight loss in detail in the selfie camera images, but nothing too annoying. Hopefully, they¡¯ll fix this in future updates.
What I disliked
OnePlus 8 Pro: Curved screens
While the panel is nothing short of amazing, what I really dislike on the OnePlus 8 Pro is the curved nature of the panel itself. Don¡¯t get me wrong, it looks beautiful. But curved screen made me hold the phone tighter than usual, fearing the device may slip out on a relaxed grip.
For someone like me who keeps on dropping his phone more often than usual, a curved panel won¡¯t last as long in my hand, regardless of the case you put on. However, in case you¡¯re someone who takes better care of your device, you should be fine.
OnePlus 8 Pro: Big form factor
At nearly 6.8-inches the device is fairly broad and tall, as well as heavy, coming at almost 200 grams.
For people who love the large screen real-estate, you¡¯re in for a treat with an engrossing viewing experience, but for people looking for a more compact solution, this phone will take some time to get used to.
No headphone dongle in the box
This is something that I touched upon even with the OnePlus 7T devices launched last year. While it is true that people who can afford to buy such an expensive device can afford to buy a BT headset too (considering it has no headphone jack), not including a dongle at least is disappointing.
As for someone who really loves listening to music he/she will have to wait for a day or two to get a new headset shipped instead of getting started right out of the box. It¡¯s a small thing to include but it goes a long way.
Should you buy OnePlus 8 Pro
If you¡¯re in the market for a true flagship with no compromises, OnePlus 8 Pro truly qualifies. From a crazy beautiful display to hardware that doesn¡¯t break a sweat to wireless charging that¡¯s faster than most wired charging out there, OnePlus 8 Pro is a full package. At a price tag, of Rs 54,999, it sure is pricey for a OnePlus, but well worth every rupee.
