Unvaccinated People 29 Times More Likely To Be Hospitalised From Covid, Finds Study
A US study sheds light on the lifesaving nature of COVID-19 vaccines and how those who haven't been vaccinated remain at the highest risk of catching a serious infection
A local study from Los Angeles, United States is shedding light on the lifesaving nature of COVID-19 vaccines and how the unvaccinated remain at high risk of hospitalisation.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), unvaccinated people in the US county of Los Angeles were 29 times more likely to be hospitalised after catching COVID-19 than the fully vaccinated.
Vaccines equal more protection
The CDC also claimed that unvaccinated people in the country were also five times more likely to contract COVID-19 than those who had received both the doses of a coronavirus vaccine.
The insights were shared by CDC in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report on Tuesday.
Previous studies have highlighted how getting any COVID-19 vaccines can help reduce the risk of infection and hospitalisation among people, especially those at the highest risk of developing complications.

The study also showed how vaccines are not perfect at preventing infections as breakthrough cases surfaced. Taking into account information from May 1 to July 25, the study documented over 43,000 coronavirus infections in the country among people aged 16 and above.
Out of these, a quarter cases were reported among the fully vaccinated, 3.3 per cent among those partially vaccinated and a whopping 71.4 per cent among the unvaccinated.
Delta variant puts up a strong fight
The vaccines also seem to be losing some amount of efficacy against the Delta variant.
CDC data showed that unvaccinated folks were eight times as likely to catch coronavirus than those who were fully vaccinated.
By July 25, this had dropped to nearly five times as likely! Even then, vaccines are doing a fantastic job at preventing serious illness among those who manage to catch the virus.

Compared to unvaccinated people, fully vaccinated folks were only not hospitalised in lower numbers but also didn't require intensive care or mechanical ventilation.
¡°These infection and hospitalization rate data indicate that authorized vaccines were protective against SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe COVID-19 during a period when transmission of the Delta variant was increasing,¡± the report reads.
