Elon Musk Says He'll Take Humans To Mars In Five Years, But Is It Possible?
In conversation with Time, Person of The Year Elon Musk said that he will put man on Mars in the next five years. But are Elon Musk's claims feasible?
Elon Musk doesn't want to delay space supremacy of human beings any further. The SpaceX and Tesla founder has revealed his new timeline for travel to Mars.
Turns out, Elon Musk says he would be "surprised" in case humans aren't landing on "Mars within five years." In conversation with Time Magazine after being named their Person of The Year for the year 2021.
Elon Musk's grand plans for Mars
Elon Musk has grand plans for a human colony on Mars, including a self-sustaining city running on solar-powered hydroponic farms to create permanent residencies for human beings. This is the first step in realising Musk's hopes of permanently putting humans on Mars.
Referring to the potential Mars colony, Musk told Time the following - ¡°Sort of like a futuristic Noah¡¯s ark. We¡¯ll bring more than two, though ¡ª it¡¯s a little weird if there¡¯s only two.¡±

Even then, Musk is notorious for providing multiple estimates at once and both SpaceX and Tesla are infamous for delays. "Punctuality is not my strong suit," Musk announced during an earnings call in 2020.
Is it even doable?
Can we really be on Mars in five years from now? It's not simple. In conversation with Business Insider, space policy expert Greg Autry said that with or without NASA's help, SpaceX wouldn't reach Mars before 2029.

Earlier, Musk had also claimed that several astronauts would "probably die" on their way to Mars. For starters, this has never been done before so a lot could go wrong. In addition, Musk hasn't really revealed any concrete action plans for Mars. In February as well, Musk had claimed in a Clubhouse chat he wants to put humans on Mars in about "five and a half years."
