Guy Makes Handbags Recycling 150 Million Ton Plastic From Our Oceans To Save Planet
The brand is called Rothy¡¯s and what they¡¯re doing is using the extracted plastic bottles and turning them into weave fabric that they call recycled PET or rPET. These are created on a machine that is patented by Rothy¡¯s which are designed to create zero waste on the cutting-room floor.
Plastic is probably the best and worst thing that could have happened to the world. While it enabled making products look and feel premium in a cost-effective way, the non-bio-degradable nature of plastic is damaging the environment in a truly irreversible way.
And most of this plastic is seen at the bottom of the ocean, affecting marine life. According to Oceanconservancy.org, every year around eight million metric tons of plastic enters our oceans -- adding to the already present 150 million metric tons. However, now a brand has tried to extract this plastic from the ocean and recycle it to make shoes and handbags like this.
The brand collects plastics from within 30 miles of coastlines which is then recycled through conventional methods. Now this plastic is coming from saltwater which weakens the plastic¡¯s structural integrity. To fix this problem, they mix the plastic with some regular recycled plastic.
According to Roth Martin, Rothy¡¯s cofounder and CEO, in a conversation with FastCompany, ¡°The result is a plastic fibre that is just as high in quality as the plastic in our shoes. That¡¯s important because we have designed all of our products to be machine washable, which requires the plastic to be durable.¡±
Rothy¡¯s makes some really cool-looking handbags, totes and even crossbody bags and clutches starting at $65 (which is approximately Rs 4,700), which might seem like a lot for many. But for those of you who could afford one, won¡¯t you feel better knowing that your bag not only looks cool but also saves your planet while making you look classy.
