The council has published a report which has revealed that it is no longer safe for a person to consume two drinks in a day. This report has lead to a change in Australia¡¯ alcohol guidelines for the first time since 2009.

Earlier guidelines suggested consuming not more than two standard drinks each day or 14 drinks a week. However, the recent review revealed that the lifetime risk of dying from diseases due to alcohol or injury caused due to intoxication stayed below 1 in 100 when the alcohol consumption was limited to 10 drinks a week.
NHMRC studied the effect of alcohol on the human body for three years. Anne Kelso, the NHMRC chief executive ¡°We¡¯re providing advice about the health risks from drinking alcohol so that we can all make informed decisions in our daily lives ¨C for ourselves and for our children.¡±
She further added, ¡°It¡¯s 10 years since our last review of the guidelines and we now know more about the effects of alcohol. We know that alcohol continues to have significant direct health consequences for many Australians.¡±
The guidelines also recommend people below the age of 18 to not consume any alcohol at all. Moreover, women who¡¯re pregnant or trying to get pregnant or who are breastfeeding should refrain from alcohol too.
