NASA¡¯s moon landing Apollo missions are probably mankind¡¯s biggest achievement till date. Just to put things in perspective, only 12 people in history have ever set foot on the moon. More people have been launched into space, but never went beyond the earth's orbit. That man won¡¯t be setting foot on any other satellite/planet for a foreseeable future makes the Apollo missions truly a landmark in human history.
Now, all the images that were clicked during the Apollo missions, have been put up in hi-res glorious 1800dpi detail on Flickr for everyone to see. The images were clicked on Hasselblad cameras that the astronauts carried with them to the moon and these images are scans of the original film. The Project Apollo Archive consists of images from Apollo 7, 8, 9 and 10 test missions and also the actual landings. All the pictures ever clicked on the lunar surface are also a part of this collection. The images have been organized according to the film magazine they came out of.
Here are some of the selected images from the archives. We strongly recommend you go see the entire collection here.
1. Must have been one hell of a view for the Apollo 7 astronauts. They didn't reach the moon, but tested the Command Module that took others to its surface.
2. Apollo 8 astronauts were the first humans to see the far side of the moon with their naked eyes. Here's the earth-rise from the other side of the moon.
3. Apollo 8 was also the first mission to orbit the moon.
4. Getting ready for an EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity) on the Apollo 9 mission.
5. Apollo 9 also conducted the first manned test of the Lunar Module. Seen here is the LM in orbit around earth.
6. Apollo 10 was the dress rehearsal for the next landing mission. The Lunar Module came within 15.6 km of lunar surface.
7. Moon approach as seen from the Apollo 11 mission that took man to the moon.
8. Second man on the moon, Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin climbs down from the Lunar Module. Picture clicked by Neil Armstrong.
9. With only 1/6th the gravity, lifting heavy loads isn't difficult.
10. Apollo 11 didn't just make a statement, the mission also conducted scientific research and left various scientific equipment on the lunar surface.
11. Shadow of the Lunar Module, before it left the moon.
12. Third man on the moon, Pete Conrad, exits the Lunar Module of Apollo 12 mission to begin his EVA.
13. Apollo 13 didn't reach the moon because of an accident in space, but it made a slingshot approach round the moon. The Lunar Module was used as a 'life boat' to bring the astronauts safely back to earth.
14. The Apollo 13 LM being jettisoned on the approach back to earth. It had served its purpose and kept the astronauts alive as they returned home.
15. Apollo 14 astronaut examines a rock formation on the moon's surface. Very earth-like in appearance you would agree.
16. The use of Lunar Rover (or Lunar Roving Vehicle/LRV) allowed the astronauts to expand their reach away from the landing site.
17. Apollo 16 astronaut collects samples of moon rocks to be brought back to earth.
18. 'I can move this' seems to be the motto here.
19. Space grade tools don't get simpler than this.
20. Beep Beep. Get out of the way buddy!
21. Ronald Evans, the last man to orbit the moon alone, shaves on board the Apollo 17.
