People Recovered From Covid-19 Show Hair Loss Six Months Later, Study Finds
This is according to a study published in the prestigious journal Lancelet, which revealed that 359 out of 1,655 patients who were hospitalised for the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, Hubei province in China, experienced hair loss nearly six months after being discharged from the hospital.
COVID-19 has been something the whole world has been trying to avoid since quite some time. While it has claimed lot of lives, plenty have recovered from the pandemic's grip.
However, people who got infected and survived the difficult ordeal have experienced numerous side effects such as loss of smell, chest pains, difficulty breathing, fatigue etc as well as several long-term side effects which even include brain and neurological damage. And now, you can add hair loss to this list too.
This is according to a study published in the prestigious journal Lancelet, which revealed that 359 out of 1,655 patients who were hospitalised for the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, Hubei province in China, experienced hair loss nearly six months after being discharged from the hospital.
For this study, patients were interviewed with a series of questionnaires which were created to evaluate the symptoms and quality of health and life after recovering from the novel coronavirus. They also underwent physical examination, including a 6-minute walking test along with blood tests.
They saw that 63 percent experienced fatigue or muscle weakness, 26 percent experienced issues with sleep. Around 23 percent had had anxiety or depression, as well as 22 per cent with hair loss.
Now, it is not uncommon to experience hair loss after a stressful event in our body like infection or disease etc. However, researchers warn that the hair loss post novel coronavirus but could boost other hair loss conditions that could have long-term consequences if left untreated.
Authors, from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, explain, ¡°The aim of this study was to describe the long-term health consequences of patients with COVID-19 who have been discharged from hospital. To our knowledge, this is the largest cohort study with the longest follow-up duration assessing the health consequences of adult patients discharged from the hospital recovering from Covid-19.¡±
