New Robotic Technology Detects, Treats Lung Cancer Before It Becomes Deadly
Doctors at Main Line Health say that robotic technology can find lung cancer early and also treat it at the same time
A new robotic procedure is saving lives of many people with lung cancer. Usually, lung cancer becomes deadly because it's difficult to spot early on. Doctors at Main Line Health say that robotic technology can find lung cancer early and also treat it at the same time, CBS reported.
The new technology is called "robotic bronchoscopy" and allows doctors to reach remote parts of the lung through imaging guidance and mini-tubes.
A special piece of tech
The most special thing about this technology is perhaps that if traces of cancer are found in the lung, doctors can treat it at the same time while patients are under general anesthesia.
"When they wake up, we say you have lung cancer and it's treated. And that is all the difference," Dr. Patrick Ross from Main Line Health told CBS, calling it "revolutionary."

According to doctors, this robotic tech may be especially important for people who are at high-risk of developing lung cancer. According to a new report, former smokers who can avail the benefits of this tech are not getting access to it. Trends also suggest that young nonsmokers are also contracting lung cancer these days.
Factors like air pollution can add to the chances of developing lung cancer among people. Besides smoking, another common cause of lung cancer is radon, a radioactive gas that forms when radioactive metals break down in rocks, soil naturally.

In India, about 70,000 cases of lung cancer are reported. These numbers are expected to rise to 81,000+ among males and 30,000 in females in 2025. Such tech could be extremely useful in limiting the fatalities associated with lung cancer.
