NASA is all set to blast off its Artemis-1 mission this month along with a flight test dummy. And now, the dummy is going to have a rather fun company with beloved ¡®Shaun The Sheep¡¯ joining the mission, representing ESA.
This will actually make Shaun the first ESA astronaut to participate in the Artemis mission. The announcement was officially made by the European Space Agency.
ESA Director for Human and Robotic Exploration, David Parker said in a statement, ¡°This is an exciting time for Shaun and for us at ESA. We¡¯re woolly very happy that he¡¯s been selected for the mission and we understand that, although it might be a small step for a human, it¡¯s a giant leap for lambkind.¡±
When is Artemis I launching?
The launch for the Artemis I mission was aligned after a successful fueling test of its next-generation SLS rocket. According to NASA, the launch could be conducted as early as August 23.
The mission will involve both Shaun and Commander Moonikin Campos (the human dummy) on a trip aboard the Orion spacecraft that¡¯ll make its journey to our planet¡¯s satellite.
According to ESA, the spacecraft will perform a flyby of the Moon using lunar gravity, in order to gain speed and propel itself 70,000 kilometres beyond the Moon, around half a million kilometres from Earth, which will be the farthest any human or sheep has ever travelled in space.
While the company behind Shaun the Sheep, Aardman, hasn¡¯t revealed much about the mission, Shaun is actually going to undertake the important task of being a zero-g indicator.
