This Headless Robot Moves Like A Real Dog, And Is Everything That Fuels Your Worst Nightmares
The bot is the latest in a developmental line of household bots by the company.
Boston Dynamics, a robot maker that¡¯s been in the spotlight for the past few years, has just published a video to YouTube, capturing its latest and most advanced robot in action.
And to be honest, we¡¯re not sure whether to be impressed or horrified at how realistic it is.
Boston Dynamics
Called the SpotMini robot, the mechanical creature was first unveiled by the company in June 2016. Boston Dynamics was owned by Alphabet at the time, before eventually being sold to Japan-based telecom/tech giant SoftBank.
The SpotMini originally started out as a household robot looking more like deer than its current dog form. At the time, not only was it terrible at performing said chores, it was also prone to slipping on banana peels.
The new version has none of those issues. First off, it has a makeover to give it a much more polished look. The tall neck is gone, making it now resemble a weird metal dog hybrid. It even moves like a real dog too, as it trots around on four ¡°paws¡±, albeit in a very showboating manner.
However, it¡¯s that range and fluidity of movement that perfectly demonstrate just how much progress Boston Dynamics has made in the field, building animal-inspired robots that can be used in real-life situations.
The video says the SpotMini is ¡°coming soon,¡± but it¡¯s not yet clear whether that means the bot is just going to get an official reveal as a technological marvel, or is actually going up for sale as a commercial product. Either way, consider us both excited and incredibly creeped out.
