Wind Turbine Nearly Twice The Size Of Qutub Minar Developed, Could Power 100,000 People
Large wind turbine blades enable generating efficient energy using winds as they help in getting that much air in their grasp. The newly developed wind turbine also promises to push beyond the 18MW threshold with a massive swept area of 66,052 square feet.
China¡¯s MingYang has developed what possibly could be the world¡¯s largest wind turbine ever built, with blades as long as 140 metres, reveals a report by Recharge.
Large wind turbine blades enable generating efficient energy using winds as they help in getting that much air in their grasp. The newly developed wind turbine also promises to push beyond the 18MW threshold with a massive swept area of 66,052 square feet.
The company also claims that the turbines can handle the most extreme weather conditions in the ocean, which include level-17 typhoons with wind speeds of over 202 kilometres per hour. To put things in perspective, average wind speeds in such regions are around 30.6 kilometres per hour.
The wind turbine will be able to generate around 80GWh of energy every year, which is enough to power almost 100,000 people.'
While the larger size is to trap as much air as possible for generating electricity, it also tries to be a cost-cutting measure that could help reduce the capital cost of wind farm setup and eventually, the cost of energy produced by them.
MingYang revealed this via a post on its social media handles. It said in a statement, ¡°When compared to the installation of 13MW models, the higher output of the MySE18.X-28X would save 18 units required for a 1GW wind farm, shaving off construction costs by $120,000-150,000 per megawatt.¡±
