Woman's Breast Implant Saved Her Life By Stopping A Bullet From Killing Her

You hear reports of bulletproof jackets saving people¡¯s lives countless number of times. Even phones have stopped bullets from penetrating into people¡¯s bodies at times.

But have you ever heard of a breast implant stopping a bullet from killing a woman? That's exactly what's happened.

Doctors came across a case where a breast implant prevented the bullet from reaching the person¡¯s heart.

This report was recently published in the journal Plastic Surgery Case Studies written by lead author and plastic surgeon Giancarlo McEvenue with other fellow doctors.

They¡¯ve stated that the 30-year-old woman was walking down a street in Toronto in 2018, when she experienced sudden pain and heat in her left chest.

When she looked down, she noticed blood flowing out of her body. She was then taken to an emergency room immediately where doctors saw a gunshot wound located above her left nipple.

The examination then revealed that the bullet had actually gotten trapped in the breast implant, but apart from that, she felt fine. Doctors then removed the implant to find the bullet had clearly travelled through the left-side implant, which deflected it over to the right implant with the force and also flipped the right implant upside down in the process. The bullet then travelled through breast tissue before finally becoming embedded in her right chest.

All she suffered was a fractured rib and loss of her breast implants. After removing the implants she was given some antibiotics and eventually, she recovered without any complications. She was asked to refrain from getting new implants for at least six months, to prevent infection, she could surely opt for them when everything was healed appropriately.

McEvenue and other researchers looked up similar cases and found four other cases where a woman¡¯s breast implant had saved the bullet from severely harming them. In most cases, the implant slowed down the bullet which prevented it from making any fatal moves.

The test

They even looked at a test that saw how good implants were at stopping bullets.

In case you didn¡¯t know, bullets travel at an average speed of 2500 feet per second. The implants are mostly made of silicone, which is filled with a saline gel solution to mimicking human flesh.

According to researcher Christopher J. Pannucci, one of the authors of the study published in Journal of Forensic Sciences, ¡°The experimental design allowed the bullet to pass-through an implant and into ballistics gel or into ballistics gel without passage through an implant. Shots that passed through an implant had 20.6% decreased penetration distance when compared to shots that did not pass-through an implant; this difference was statistically significant.¡±

They concluded, ¡°Implant group bullets mushroomed prior to gel entry, but the no implant group mushroomed within the gel. Bullet passage through a saline breast implant results in direct bullet velocity reduction and earlier bullet mushrooming; this causes significantly decreased ballistics gel penetration."
