A Year After Pulwama Attack, What Happened And How India Reacted

About 40 CRPF personnel were killed when the military convey was targeted by the suicide bomber of Pakistan¡¯s Jaish-e-Mohammad in J&K¡¯s Pulwama District on 14 February 2019.

What all happened on 14th February 2019?

At 3.00 PM on February 14 2019, a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist forced a vehicle carrying explosives into the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) convoy on the Jammu - Srinagar national highway. Around 40 CRPF personnel were killed when the convey was targeted by the suicide bomber of Pakistan-backed terrorists in Pulwama district.

Tensions flared up between India and Pakistan after the convoy of 78 buses in which around 2500 CRPF personnel were travelling from Jammu and Srinagar came under the attack.

The nation came out and protested against the deadly terror attack and the country also bade goodbye to its brave hearts. Leaders from all national parties came forward and condemned the attack and called for an appropriate response.

On this Prime Minister Narender Modi declared ¡°I feel the same fire in my heart that¡¯s raging inside you¡±

He had also said ¡°all tears will be avenged" and the armed forces have been given "full freedom to decide the place, time, intensity and nature of the retaliation against the enemy".

How the world reacted: United Nations and countries across the globe came forward and condemned the Pulwama terror attack and also extended there support to fight against terrorism.

Following this deadly attack, India had launched extensive diplomatic efforts to get Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar designated as a global terrorist. After the long efforts and right approach this became a reality on May 1 when China lifted its technical hold on a proposal introduced by the US and the UK and France in the Committee 1267 of the UN Security Council.

About 12 days after the dastardly terror attack in the early hours of February 26, Indian Air Force jets bombed the Jaish-e-Mohammed camp in Balakot, in Pakistan¡¯s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In a press conference later Foreign Secretary spoke about the incident and said ¡°In an intelligence-led operation in the early hours of today, India struck the biggest training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed in Balakot. In this national operation, a very large number of Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists, senior commanders and group of Jihadis who were trained for fidayeen were eliminated. This troop was headed by Maulana Yousaf Azhar, the brother-in-law of Masood Azhar (chief Jaish-e-Mohammad).

A day later on February 27, Indian Air Force foiled an attempt by Pakistan Air Force to strike at military installations in Jammu and Kashmir. In the aerial fight , Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman who was piloting a MIG-21 Bison aircraft shot down by a much advanced F-16 of PAF.

After this his aircraft was also hit and upon ejection, he landed in POK (Pakistan occupied Kashmir), where he was taken captive by the Pakistan Army.

After the immense international pressure, Pakistan released the IAF pilot two days later. He returned to his country to a hero¡¯s welcome.
