Do you love watching anime series? Well, then this will shock you. A man convicted of murdering an 89-year-old in Auckland may have been acting out a scene from the Japanese anime TV series and ended up committing the crime.
According to the NZ Herald, the man has been identified as Gabriel Hikari Yad-Elohim, who murdered Michael Mulholland in the stairwell of his flat in 2017. As per the report, the 36-year-old criminal's lawyer had argued that he was not in his right mental condition at the time when he killed Mulholland.
An anime fan or a patient with schizophrenia
As the case unfolded, the lawyer to the convict revealed that Gabriel had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, and now he has been given a life prison sentence for the brutal murder.
Further, a forensic psychiatrist claimed that the crime had been acting as the anime character from a Japanese animated series character called Ichigo Kurosaki, as they noticed a rare similarity between the anime and the attack.
The court said that the convict believed he was a character from the anime, and during the argument in the court, the lawyer gave a monologue in the Japanese language that matched the show.
How Yad-Elohim killed the 90-year-old
The report later explained how the crime unfolded; it mentioned that Yad-Elohim hit the victim 90 times in just a few minutes, which included kicks and stomps to the head. Mulholland died soon after due to severe injuries.
During the court hearings, the killer appealed to the Supreme Court with a video from a Japanese anime series called Bleach, where a Grim Reaper-styled character defends people from evil spirits and guides souls to the afterlife.
The whole incident happened under the enragement of the convict, who went to the victim's apartment building with a sex worker to buy drugs, and the woman told him to wait downstairs and fled away from the scene with his money.
This enraged Yad-Elohim, who then went to Mulholland's apartment and killed him.
