Chris Evans' MCU return with Avengers: Doomsday sparks backlash: 'It's like Endgame didn't even matter'
MCU seems to be following the classic template of tapping into nostalgia to lure fans. A recent example of the same is Chris Evans' reported Marvel return with Doomsday. However, the move has attracted backlash more than it has sparked enthusiasm.
Chris Evans is reportedly returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). According to reports, Evans will be seen in Avengers: Doomsday in some capacity. Directed by Russo Brothers, the film marks Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the MCU as Doctor Doom. The film is currently scheduled for release on May 1, 2026.
Chris Evans to make MCU return
According to a report by The Wrap, Chris Evans will rejoin the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday, but details related to his role remain scarce. The upcoming project explores multiple timelines and universes, accommodating the way for a massive reunion of various Marvel characters, alongside new additions.

Chris Evans' recent Marvel outing
In a surprising move to MCU fans, Chris Evans recently revisited his role as Johnny Storm in Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer Deadpool and Wolverine. Evans, of course, is best known for his legendary portrayal of Captain America, but his recent return hinted he is open to playing more Marvel characters.
Which character would Chris Evans play in Avengers: Doomsday?
Deadline, meanwhile, reported Anthony Mackie will reprise his role as Sam Wilson, aka Captain America, in an upcoming Marvel project. Notably, Evans' Rogers passed the iconic shiled to Wilson in Avengers: Endgame.
Given Wilson's established role, Chris Evans' return as Captain America seems less likely. However, it's still possible that Evans could reprise his role as Steve Rogers in a different capacity.
Fans are not happy with Chris Evans' MCU return
First Robert Downey Jr, and now Chris Evans, Marvel seems to be bringing their iconic characters back, despite giving them an honourable farewell in Avengers: Endgame.
Following a string of recent flops, the studio may be attempting to recapture the magic of its earlier successes by revisiting beloved characters and storylines. However, MCU fanatics are not fans of Marvel's strategic move to tap into nostalgia, without working to find fault in their current stars.
