Elon Musk, the tech billionaire and Tesla owner, has announced that he is not interested in buying TikTok, the popular short-video app that the United States government has been trying to ban over national security concerns with its Chinese owner, Bytedance.
Musk, in a conference in Germany, said that he did not put in a bid for TikTok and he doesn't have any plans to buy the app.
The SpaceX owner made these comments in late January, which were released online on Saturday by The WELT Group, a part of the German media company Axel Springer SE. Axel Springer SE also hosted a summit where Musk joined the conference through video.
Why is Elon Musk not interested in buying TikTok?
According to a Reuters report, ByteDance was given a deadline for January to sell the US assets of TikTok, or else they will face a US ban. The announcement was made following the concerns of the lawmakers that the app poses national security risks as China could compel the company to share the data of its US users.
However, TikTok has denied that it has or ever would share any US user data. Amid all this, the Tesla owner, Elon Musk, said that he has not put a bid for TikTok, a week after US President Donald Trump announced that he was open to Musk buying the ByteDance-owned app if he wanted to do so.
Musk further revealed that he has no plans for what he would do if he had TikTok; additionally, he does not use the short video app personally, and he was not familiar with the application's format. He went on to say that he does not acquire companies in general, and it is very rare, like his billion-dollar purchase of the social media platform Twitter, now called.
