Day 15: I Made A List Of Things We Can Buy That Are Made Out Of Ocean Waste

Turning trash into treasure has been a dream of environmentalists who are worried about plastic pollution. It's only these handful of people who have seen the problem and are willing to do something to make people realise what we're doing to the planet.

In such a situation, awareness has been built, campaigns have been led and more people are now concerned about their 'plastic footprint', including me. A month ago, I wasn't taking any steps to cut down on plastic, because of which many marine animals have succumbed to death. But now I know how I am somehow responsible for an animal's death and this has led to a epiphany.

The other day, I learnt that many organisations are running with this crusade, even collecting ocean waste and recycling it into new products so we do not consume new plastic and put the discarded one back in the system. This is a better option since if we completely fall back on this plan, we wouldn't need tons and tons of new plastic production every day. Our old bottles, caps, bags, bins, electronics, containers, boxes and other million things will be collected from the trash and turned into treasure.

Therefore, today I am going to share a list of things you can explore that are made from ocean waste.

1. Shoes

Using several excavation machines, as much as 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris was collected from the ocean in 2016 and Adidas turned it into shoes. The company created the most beautiful pair of shoes, only 7,000 of their kind.

2. Credit Cards

American Express just launched a first-ever credit card made primarily from plastic debris recovered from the ocean. In a press release, the company said that they will make these cards available for everyone within the next 12 months.

3. Sun And Eyeglasses

Local eyewear makers in Michigan, Genusee found a way to fight the plastic that contaminated their water - they made eyeglasses out of it. They up-cycled it into stylish frames and sunny shades which apparently people love to use. A single pair of the glasses helps save 15 plastic bottles.

4. Sports Gear

Another California based company is making skateboards out of fishing nets. Tons and tons of waste fishing net are found on the banks of rivers and in the ocean every year, therefore, this company picked them and began up-cycling them.

5. Jewellery

Who would have thought that someday we could be wearing jewellery made from ocean plastic, but that's not the real question, the real question is who wouldn't want to? Till now, 4ocean, an organisation that makes jewellery from plastic waste has helped removed 815,161 pounds, and counting, of marine debris.
