Stargazers in northeastern Mexico looked up around 10:14 p.m. local time, a couple of days ago, to find an extremely bright fireball light up the sky.
It has now been reported that it was an especially bright meteor 每 falling through Earth*s atmosphere.
The meteor was also caught on some security cams, webcams and doorbell cams.It was visible over the city of Monterrey 每 in the Mexican state of Nuevo Le車n. Local newspapers in Monterrey reported that the meteorite, or chunk of space rock left after the meteor*s fall, landed in a small town in the neighbouring state of Tamaulipas.
According to Newsweek, &The fireball was most visible above the states of Nuevo Le車n, Coahuila and Tamaulipas, which border the U.S., around 10:14 p.m. local time, according to the Global Atmospheric Monitoring Agency, part of Mexico*s Institute of Geological and Atmospheric Research*.
A few days ago, many people reported the sighting of a streaking &fireball* over Pennsylvania and Ohio between 4:00 and 6:30 am, that remained in the sky for a short time before disappearing from view.
It was later established that the fireball was a meteor that &dove almost straight down into the atmosphere*.
What is a Fireball?
Thousands of meteors of fireball magnitude occur in the Earth*s atmosphere each day. However, a majority of these occur over oceans and uninhabited regions, and many cannot be seen because of the daylight. Those that occur at night also stand a low chance of being detected due to pollution and the relatively low numbers of people out to notice them.
