On this International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, please take a moment and understand the environmental crisis that is taking place as we live and breathe. Climate change is no longer a 'myth' and even people who did not consider it to be a real problem earlier are now finally coming to their senses.
Not just the coronavirus pandemic, the ever-depleting environmental resources have us worrying about our future.

Here is a list of climate-related issues that require ours and every government's immediate attention:
1. Plastics
Plastics are this planet's nightmare and it's like the world is failing to wake up from it. In spite of the plethora of information available about the ill effects of single-use plastic, the world seems to move past it and not give it a second thought. Those who have opted for more environmental-friendly alternates present a tiny speck of hope but the broad use of plastic globally is a dangerous path for planet Earth.
Eight million tonnes of plastic enters the ocean every year and only 14 per cent of plastic packaging is recycled. 83 per cent of the water we consume contains plastic fibre. Researchers strongly believe that the world needs to reconsider how it manufactures, consumes and discards end-of-life plastics.

2. Global politics
According to a report, the world is moving towards a phase of fragmented global politics. Nationalism is spreading across the world and so are the number of people joining politics as a career.
Based on the Economist Intelligence Unit's Democracy Index 2018, more and more people are now politicians than ten years ago. This will lead to an effect on sustainable development goals as well as climate change, according to researchers.

More people are online than ever before and so is the easy flow of fake news and propaganda. From governments to hackers, false news with zero credibility is shared on a huge basis every day. Misinformation is dangerous and since the online world is overcrowded enough, fake news tends to go knocking from digital door to digital door to play a sick joke on people.
Incorrect information about the environment should definitely be something which needs to be flagged as worrisome since not everyone reads a tweet and then just moves on. Some people take it to another level and before you know it, a fake 'fact' becomes national news. Also, it is extremely challenging to cater to billions of people with internet connections and not destroy the planet in the process.

4. Biodiversity in free fall
According to scientists, extinction is happening 1,000 times more as compared to 60 million years ago before humans came into being. Presently, we are experiencing the sixth mass extinction event.
The biggest cause of extinction is agriculture which is the reason behind 80 per cent deforestation and ruining wildlife habitats. Destruction of natural vegetation and wild animals is a red alarm that needs to be dealt with right away because otherwise, the whole balance of the ecosystem will go for a toss, if it hasn't already.

5. Consumerism in Asia
The biggest continent Asia is home to the top most populated countries in the world and it will most likely account for 59 per cent of the world's middle-class consumption. Even though the wealth generated in the process has improved the lives of many and pulled them out of poverty, the amount of waste generated and resources which were exploited is a big red alarm staring in our faces. If consumerism spirals out of control, doomsday isn't far.
