Actor Hina Khan who has been battling stage 3 breast cancer since June 2024 has been open about her experiences while undergoing breast cancer treatment. Sher Khan has time and again proved her unmatched resilience and courage in the fight against the deadly disease.
On Wednesday, taking to her Instagram, the actor shared a post where she discussed how the last 15-20 days were the toughest time for her both physically and mentally. She has been very candid about her journey of battling breast cancer, including her ongoing chemotherapy.
Sharing about her first trip out of town to Ahmedabad since starting chemotherapy, Hina Khan posted a YouTube video, in which she revealed her struggle with neuropathic pain that has added complexity to her existing challenging battle with cancer and chemotherapy.
What is neuropathic pain?
Neuropathic pain is nerve pain that can happen if your nervous system malfunctions or gets damaged, according to the Cleveland Clinic. In this condition, you can feel pain from any of the different levels of the nervous system, including the peripheral nerves, spinal cord and the brain.
The pain is cancer-related neuropathic pain also known as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. Some kinds of chemotherapy medicines or treatments are more likely to cause neuropathy. These may include platinum drugs, such as oxaliplatin; taxanes, such as docetaxel; vinca alkaloids, such as vincristine; and myeloma treatments, such as bortezomib.
According to JAMA Oncology, some patients are more likely to develop CIPN if they are older or have other health conditions like diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, or preexisting peripheral neuropathy.
Symptoms of neuropathic pain
Depending on the affected nerves, it may show symptoms like:
- Tingling (¡°pins and needles¡±)
- It is a pain that may turn severe and constant. The pain may come and go or feel like a burning sensation
- Decreased sensation (¡°legs feel like jelly¡±)
- Increased sensitivity to touch, temperature, pressure, pain
- Muscle weakness
