Due to rising tension between India and Pakistan, the Indian government took precautionary steps by directing all states and Union Territories to carry out civil defence mock drills on May 7, 2025. These drills, known as Operation Abhyas, are part of a broader civil defence plan aimed at improving public safety and emergency response in case of any attack or natural disaster.
The mock drills in India were carried out in 244 civil defence districts, covering major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chandigarh. These locations were chosen based on how vulnerable they are to threats. West Bengal had the most such districts (32), followed by Rajasthan (28), Assam (20), Punjab (20), and Jammu & Kashmir (20).
