Some people have a very simple way of thinking and looking at life. In a world where people are self-centred and only think about the things that will benefit them, there are people who actually believe in going beyond their call of duty to help others.
Jay Singh, owner of a 7-Eleven in Toledo, Ohio, was working in the back office when an employee alerted him of a possible shoplifter. Singh checked the CCTV cameras in the shop and watched the teenager slyly keeping some food items in his back pocket.
Singh came to the main store area, where the teen was at the counter paying for a few things. "I asked him, 'Take out whatever you have in your pocket,' so he took out one of the items," Singh told CNN.
Singh knew that he had more items, so he told him to take out everything from his pocket else he will call the police. After that he told his colleague to call 911, but few seconds later he asked the boy the most important question ¡®Why did he steal?¡¯. To this the boy replied that ¡®he was hungry¡¯.
At this point, an employee had a 911 operator on the phone but Singh told him to hang up. He said, ¡°Well that's not food. You're stealing gum, candies and junk food. That's just something for munching. If you're hungry, ask me. I'll give you food.¡±
Singh decided not to call the police, instead he gave him hot food and let him go. "When he said, I'm hungry and that's why I'm stealing, I said okay, he has some genuine problem. He's not a thief who's going and stealing stuff and selling it," Singh told CNN.
Singh didn¡¯t want to ruin the boy¡¯s life because he felt that if he went to jail he¡¯ll only learn bad things. "Once you go to jail, you'll have a criminal record later in life. You're not going to be able to get any good job or anything," Singh told CNN.
