Government schools in India are usually under fire for one reason or the other - be it because of some unqualified teachers at some schools, or the unhygienic mid-day-meal scheme at others. However, a school in Bihar is in the news for all the right reasons.
A government school in Gaya district of Bihar opens everyday to teach only one student - a little girl named Jahanvi Kumari.
She is in Class 1 and is the only student in the five-decade-old government primary school. According to Bihar Post, the school authorities say that a total of nine students are admitted to the school, but Jahnavi is the only one who attends.
¡°We are impressed with her concern for study and are devoting our full energy to impart her proper education,¡± Bihar Post quoted school teacher Priyanka Kumari as saying.
She further said, ¡°Though it gives us a boring feeling to teach only a single student in the classroom for seven hours every day, we are happy that she has kept the fire of education burning within her unlike other students.¡±
Jahnvavi has two teachers, a cook to prepare the midday meal, four classrooms and a bathroom at her disposal, in the school. In case the food is not made by the cook, it is brought from a hotel, according to the report.
according to the school principal, Satyendra Prasad, the villagers do not take an interest in sending their kids to the government school; they admit them in private schools instead.
¡°Yet we are happy that one student has been attending our school daily and that has kept us active,¡± he said.
We laud the dedication on both the part of the little girl and the school to keep her academic goals on track.
