A Man Explores The Fukushima Disaster Area 12 Years After The Nuclear Meltdown

Urban explorer Bob Thissen decided to visit the site of one of the most well-known nuclear disaster zones in the world. For those unaware, Fukushima was declared the most severe nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986. The disaster took place in 2011 when the T¨hoku earthquake and 14-metre-high tsunami disabled the power supply and cooling of three Fukushima Daiichi reactors. All three cores melted within the first three days.
The Fukushima disaster became the only other disaster besides Chernobyl to be classified as a Level 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale. In the days following the disaster, over 150K residents in a 20 km radius of the plant were forced to abandon everything they had and move away from the area.
After 12 years of the meltdown in Fukushima, some areas of the prefecture are safe to visit as the radiation in the area has gotten to a normal level, making it possible for people to explore the abandoned houses and cars in the area.
The Explorer Found Tons Of Vintage Sports And JDM Cars In The Area

Bob Thissen visited the place to quench his thirst for exploration and found tons of vintage sports cars and Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) cars lying about, reclaimed by nature.
The 34-year-old explorer travelled through exclusion zones that were safe to visit with his team, rounding up some of the old car dealerships that Bob had star-marked beforehand.

Thissen¡¯s brave move to explore the area did not disappoint, as he came across cars like the Porsche 911 Carrera (964), Nissan Skyline, Mercedes S Class, Nissan 300ZX, Nissan Silvia, Japanese hearses, Chevrolet Impala SS, Jaguar XJ, Honda S2000, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, and Subaru STI.

Well, you might be wondering if the man had just hit a gold mine of vintage cars. However, it is all just a pipe dream. The cars are not lucrative at all, and to be perfectly candid, he can¡¯t even sell these cars as scrap. Although most of the cars in the area are in great condition, the radiation levels in their metal frames make them unusable and worthless. "It was a sad sight to see these collectibles in bad shape, especially when you know every car had an owner who couldn¡¯t retrieve their vehicle," said Bob after discovering the cars.
