Pune Students Start Open Library Movement, Install Bookshelf That's Open To Everyone 24x7
A group of eight students in Pune have taken up a unique initiative to inculcate the habit of reading by providing access to books to people 24 X 7. The students call this the Open Library Movement and as part of the project they have installed an open bookshelf that can be accessed by anyone.
Social media is murdering reading habits in the current generations. Most of the time is spent in scrolling through what others are doing, can be well spent in reading which adds to knowledge, boosts creativity and aids imagination. Thus, it's more important than ever, to remind people of the joy of getting lost between pages.
For people who are already book worms, this is definitely good news. A group of eight students in Pune have taken up a unique initiative to inculcate the habit of reading by providing access to books to people 24 X 7.
According to reports, the students call this the 'Open Library Movement', and as part of the project they have installed an open bookshelf that can be accessed by anyone. They have set up an open library at Jeet playground in Kothrud, and it's open 24 hours every day.
Reports state that in the bookshelf has been placed along one of the walls in the playground, people can come and drop books they no longer need or have already read. Anyone can then simply access the books available on the bookshelf.
In an interview, Abhishek Awchar, a member of the Open Library Movement said, "We have introduced this concept of the open library in Pune not only to instill the habit of reading amongst the residents but also to motivate them to share."
For now, the library has 200 books, but they are planning to add more to their collection, depending on the number books the group receives from people.
Speaking about the unique concept, Abhishek Awchar, an author and member of the Open Library Movement was quoted as saying, ¡°Many people have offered financial aid. We do not want to involve these. We will accept books and bookshelves only. We believe that the citizens will take this cause ahead.¡±
The library works on the principle of ¡®for the people, by the people and of the people¡¯, so, it will be maintained by the residents of that area.
