New Yorkers took to the Internet to share some stunning shots of Manhattanhenge¡ªa phenomenon where the sunset aligns with the Manhattan grid's east-west streets.
The final Manhattanhenge occurred on July 11, for the last complete alignment of the year.
A half-sun aligned with the grid around 8:30 p.m. local time on July 12, and the next full-sun Manhattanhenge will be in 2023.

What is Manhattenhenge?
Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson coined the term "Manhattanhenge," equating the sun's unusual alignment with the grid to how the sun rises behind the Heel Stone at the neolithic Stonehenge monument in the United Kingdom. Stonehenge was believed to have been created in this way, particularly to frame the solstice dawn in late June, which is the day of the year with the most daylight hours. Manhattan's alignment, though, is a happy coincidence.
When does Manhattenhenge occur?
Manhattanhenge takes place about three weeks before and following the June 21 solstice, which this year fell between May 30 and July 12. The ideal locations to watch the unusual sight are along the island's east-west thoroughfares, particularly 14th Street, 23rd Street, 34th Street, 42nd Street, and 57th Street.
However, Manhattanhenge may also be seen from Long Island City in Queens, which is across the East River.
In December and January, the dawn coincides with the Manhattan grid, creating the so-called Reverse Manhattanhenges that border the winter solstice. However, the summer alignment is by far the most well-liked by tourists.
Over the past few years, more and more people have rushed to observe the phenomenon, as social media has made it possible for spectators to share the magnificent sight with a worldwide audience.
