Four women performed the last rites of their mother - even carrying her on shoulders for 4 kms to the crematorium - after their two brothers didn¡¯t attend the funeral in Odisha.
The incident was reported from Mangalaghat area in Puri town. As per reports, Jati Nayak, an octogenarian of the locality, passed away on Sunday.
Jati had two sons and four daughters. While her daughters are married off, her sons and their families live separately.
The neighbors informed her two sons about the demise of their mother but neither of them turned up to perform the filial duties. The four daughters of Jati then took the onus on themselves - breaking stereotypical and cultural barriers - to cremate their mother.
The daughters, with the help of some neighbours, prepared a pyre and carried their mother's body for 4 kms to reach the cremation ground (Swarga dwar) to perform the last rites, India Today reported.
¡°Our brothers had been neglecting our mother for the last 10 years. They never allowed her to stay with them. During these years, they never, even for once, inquired her if she was well, let alone taking care of her food. Prior to her death, she had once become ill and we had to shift her to hospital in an ambulance. Then, too, our brothers had chosen to remain indifferent," Sitamani Sahu, one of the daughters, told News18.
It was reported that after her husband's death, Nayak had to fend for the family as a street vendor. Instead of taking care, the daughters claimed that their brothers were ¡°torturing¡± Nayak.
The incident is yet another proof that lay bare how humanity is fast vanishing and filial duties are losing their intrinsic values in the so-called modern society of the 21st century.
