'Professional Baby Namer' Says Rich Parents Pay Her Rs 7 Lakh For Providing A Perfect Name For Their Baby
The New York-based Humphrey, who is a 'professional baby namer', is getting paid upward of $1,500 by expectant parents to pick a perfect moniker for their baby.
Picking a baby name is one of the first decisions you make as a parent. And now there are professionals who can make your task easier. However, hiring a professional baby namer might just cost you a fortune!
A New York-based 'professional baby namer', Taylor A. Humphrey, is getting paid upward of $1,500 (Rs 1.14 lakh) by expectant parents to pick a perfect moniker for their baby.
Some parents go as far as paying an astonishing sum of $10,000 (Rs 7.6 lakh) so that 33-year-old Humphrey can help them settle on a perfect name for their baby.
¡°If you look at the most popular baby names, it¡¯s such a telltale sign of our cultural values and our aspirations,¡± Humphrey told The New Yorker.
Last year, she helped name more than a hundred kids. Parents can choose from Humphrey¡¯s services, which start at $1,500 and can go as far as $ 10,000.
The low-range $1,500 service includes a phone call and a bespoke name list (based on parents¡¯ answers to a questionnaire) to a genealogical investigation, with the aim of ferreting out old family names.
A $10,000 option involves selecting a name that will be on-brand with a parent¡¯s business.
Humphrey began her journey back in 2015 when she started sharing her favorite baby names and their meanings on social media.
"I found there was a very high engagement considering how few followers I had. When I began posting on Instagram, people were coming to me about their love for names. I was always a name nerd, so I was very surprised there were a lot of us," she told The Sun.
But it wasn't until 2018, when Humphrey realised that helping women with the baby naming process would be the way she could support them through this major life change.
"And that's when it switched for me, when I realized that I had a very niche skill and people were coming to me for it, so why not help women in this way?" she explained.
While some people may accuse couples of being lazy by seeking help in naming their baby, Humphrey insisted that the paying parents are simply anxious 'perfectionists'.
And if they don¡¯t settle on her suggestions for a first name, she said they often end up as middle names.
¡°Sometimes you see a name like Brave on my list and you think, ¡®I¡¯m just not going to name my kid Brave. But it might be worth putting on a maybe list as a thought for a middle name, she added.
