Instead Of Wasting Milk Offered By Devotees, Temple Feeds It To Stray Dogs & Wins Hearts

While humans have been finding myriad ways to deal with the lockdown, it's the stray animals who are witnessing the worst of it. Not many think about feeding them. But thanks to some good Samaritans, not all is lost. This temple in Mumbai has started a unique initiative to feed stray dogs and is winning hearts online.
It's a known fact that gallons of milk and other food offerings in temples often go to waste. However, this temple consciously collects all the milk to feed street dogs.
According to a video shared by a Facebook page named Animal matter to me, Mumbai volunteers collect the milk served during rituals and ceremonies in the temple and served it to a bunch of stray dogs that would otherwise struggle to find food.

In the video, volunteers are shown pouring the milk from a can into an elongated feeder bowl as the dogs gather around the bowl.
Thousands of litres of milk are often wasted after being poured on idols at Hindu temples, one person said, 'It's a very nice thing, it should be followed by all the temples so that there are no strays hungry¡± another one mentioned, 'This should be made mandatory in all temples and place of worship for all animals and children on streets,' wrote another.

Some others pointed out that milk is not a very good food option for the furry animals. A user commented, ¡°Milk is a good source of calcium for us, but isn't such a healthy choice for our dogs. That's because many dogs are lactose intolerant ¨C milk can upset their stomach, give them gas or cause them to bloat. It used to be common for people to give milk to puppies¡±, a different user wrote.
Nevertheless, places of worship like these are truly setting an example of compassion and kindness. Nowadays, people are embracing rationality over religious practices to fight wastage and help those who are in need.
Last year, Gangadhareshwara Temple in Bengaluru City adopted a middle-of-the-road solution to let devotees offer litres of milk to the shivling and converted the milk offering for the deity into buttermilk prasadam for devotees, reports Bengaluru Mirror.
