Canada's Travel Advisory Warns LGBTQ Travellers Of Discrimination Risks In The US
Canada warns LGBTQ visitors that they may experience prejudice in the United States.
Canada has issued a travel warning to LGBTQ visitors about potential prejudice when visiting the United States. The Canadian government is advised to promote awareness and guide LGBTQ people considering vacations to the United States.
The international travel recommendation warns that the LGBTQ+ community may suffer discrimination in some areas of the United States.
Recently, as many as 18 US states passed laws restricting, and in some cases outright prohibiting, gender-affirming medical care for children and teaching about sexual orientation in schools, among other community-relevant issues.
Canada's LGBTQ Travel Alert: There Is A Risk Of Discrimination In The US For LGBTQ Travellers
The advice may have an impact on around 1 million LGBTQ+ Canadians. It does not, however, address specific US states or policies.
The Canadian government's LGBT travel webpage warns visitors about potential difficulties they may experience outside Canada. "Foreign laws and customs concerning sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) can differ significantly from those in Canada."
As a result, when you go outside of Canada, you may encounter some obstacles and risks.
"Research and prepare for your trip ahead of time to ensure a smooth journey," it advises.
According to the CBC, former foreign affairs minister and Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland endorses the upgrade.
"Every Canadian government, including ours, must put the interests and safety of every single Canadian and every single group of Canadians at the centre of everything we do," she said.
"That's exactly what we're doing right now. That is what we will always do."
When asked about Canada's revised travel warning, a US State Department official stated, "The United States is committed to promoting tolerance, inclusion, justice, and dignity while advancing the equality and human rights of LGBTQI+ people."
We must all continue cooperating with like-minded allies in the United States, Canada, and worldwide."
While the United States is a popular destination for many travellers, including LGBTQ people, the warning emphasises the importance of understanding the diverse levels of acceptance and legal protections that exist across different states and areas.
Canada has a strong history of supporting LGBTQ rights and equality. The government has set a precedent by legalising same-sex marriage and protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination.
The travel warning reflects Canada's commitment to preserving the safety and well-being of its citizens overseas, particularly those who may encounter unique obstacles due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.
While the advice acts as a precaution, it also emphasises the significance of encouraging global understanding and acceptance.
LGBTQ visitors are encouraged to plan their journeys carefully, seek local information and services, and exhibit awareness and caution while visiting the United States or any other country.
