'Coolest Dad Ever' Builds Swimming Pool For His Kids From Scratch After Watching YouTube Tutorials
Alex Dodman always wanted to build a garden pool at his home in Saffron Walden, Essex and decided to go for it after watching Youtube tutorials
To get some respite from the heatwave, a father of two built a swimming pool in his backyard after watching YouTube tutorials.
Father builds a swimming pool by himself
36-year-old Alex Dodman from Saffron Walden, Essex, dreamt of building a swimming pool in his back garden after moving into his home with partner Sarah back in 2017.
After Alex started construction on the pool in 2020, he bought most of the materials from Facebook. This saved him thousands. The total cost of the build was just ?10K, compared to over ?12K for a professional, in-built swimming pool.
He explained, "I did everything myself, from picking up the materials and carrying them into my garden, to hiring a digger and digging the hole as well as the tiling and all of the plumbing."
This is not his first DIY project. Alex has made several DIY projects, having previously built a home cinema and gym saving ?75K, with this latest project being his most impressive yet.
Alex moved into his home with his partner Sarah who is an HR manager and their two young children Allie, and Eddie. The man has been getting busy renovating the family home, ripping it out and starting over.
Taking up a hobby for DIY, Alex always knew he wanted to build his own swimming pool after seeing a corner of his garden that looked like it needed some TLC. Then the man made sure to learn all of it by himself.
Building the swimming pool was hard
However, Alex underestimated how tough building a pool would be. He said, "I watched a video on YouTube on my lunch break of someone building a pool and that same day I was on the phone hiring a mini digger. I had dreamt of having pool once the house was renovated, and I'd even earmarked a little patch to hopefully build it on one day."
"When I watched a YouTube video of a woman in Holland building pool, I knew I wanted to do it."
Covid stopped his project for months. But after that, he continued and got done with it. Alex added: "I did the whole thing by myself, from putting all the materials in my car and bringing them home to resurfacing the ground to make it flat."
He finally got done in 2021.
