3 Friends Celebrating 'Day Of The Dead' Holiday In Mexico Die In Airbnb After Gas Inhalation

The bodies of three American friends who traveled to Mexico to celebrate the Day of the Dead were recovered inside an Airbnb. The annual holiday is celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2.

For Day of the Dead in Norfolk, Virginia, Kandace Florence, 28, stayed at the Airbnb with Jordan Marshall, 28, a friend from high school, and Marshall's friend Courtez Hall.

"We can confirm the death of three U.S. citizens in Mexico. We are closely monitoring local authorities' investigation into the cause of death. We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance," a State Department spokesperson informed People.

"Out of respect for the families privacy, we have nothing further to add at this time."

According to the site, Kandace informed her boyfriend that she wasn't feeling well while they were speaking on October 30. They were conversing on the phone when she suddenly felt ill, and the line was disconnected.

When Kandace was unavailable, her boyfriend reached out to the Airbnb host and requested that they could check on the trio. When the police arrived, Wavy claimed that they had all been found dead.

The relatives of Kandace and Jordan have voiced their need for information concerning what happened to them.

Jordan's sister, Jasmine Marshall, recalled reading the tragic news on social media on October 31.

"I saw my brother's name, and I read it, and my heart sank, and the hardest thing was to break the news to my mom," an emotional Jasmine told CBS affiliate WTKR.

Jordan's mother, Jennifer Marshall, informed WTKR that the families still don't understand how he and his friends died unexpectedly.

"The Mexican police were not very forthcoming with information. Also, the language barrier was incredibly difficult as well."

His body has arrived in Virginia, where he and Kandace both live. Additionally, Kandace's body will soon arrive in Virginia. On Thursday, November 10, which would have been her 29th birthday, the family plans to hold a candlelight vigil.

Kandace's mother, Freida Florence, told WTKR of her death, "The biggest question was 'Where do we start?'"

Opening up about her daughter, she said, "Think of positivity and mindfulness, and love the moment you're in."

According to her mother, Kandace wanted her candle business to promote optimism.

Courtez taught social studies at the KIPP Memorial School in New Orleans, as per her mother.

"My son was a joyous child," Ceola Hall told New Orleans NBC affiliate WDSU. "He loved me; he loved his family. He loved to make everyone laugh."

Just a few days before receiving the news of his passing from the U.S. Embassy, she and Courtez's sisters had their last conversation. Courtez, according to numerous reports, was 33 years old.

"It's been so hard," she told the outlet. "We tried calling back over there for the funeral homes. Because of the language barrier and stuff, you cannot get anything through or really understand."

Ceola said, "I would hate to see any parents go through what I went through with my son; I didn't expect to hear this about my son. No one expects that."

According to a report in Bloomberg, the autopsy on the bodies concluded that the cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning.
