90-Year-Old Man Comes Out As Gay During Pride Month And People Are Nothing But Supportive

June is celebrated as the Pride month to acknowledge the rights and freedom of LGBTQ+ community. A lot of people use this time to come out to their friends and family, or to make them realise the struggles of being queer.

One of the best ¡®coming out' stories of this year¡¯s Pride month has to be Kenneth Felts's.

He is a 90-year-old man who came out as gay to his friends and family via email and Facebook during the Pride Month. Kenneth Felts is former counsellor and supervisor from Colorado. He reportedly knew that he was gay since the age of 12 and decided to go public while trying to write his memoirs amid lockdown. Imagine having to live with a secret like that for about 80 years.

In his memoirs he talks about the romance he had with a man named Philip in the 1950s. However coming out in the mid-20th century was way harder than it is today.

"Coming out in the ¡¯50s, ¡¯60s and ¡¯70s was horrendous. That was part of the reason I didn¡¯t ever consider coming out (before). There was no gay community, there really weren¡¯t gay organizations or anything. People who came out, came out on their own, without support. And I guess I didn¡¯t have the courage to face society at that time, so I just went ahead and buried it," he told The Denver Post.

The two lost contact and Kenneth went on to marry a woman, but later got divorced.

After getting to know his story, a large number of people lauded his decision and supported his coming-out.

"I¡¯ve been in the closet all my life ¡ª deep in the closet, behind rows and rows of clothing. I¡¯m way back there. Opening that door at the front, I had great trepidation as to what people would say. I was very concerned because I needed people and I couldn¡¯t stand the thought of losing them just because I decided to finally be who I really was," the 90-year-old reportedly said.

Now that Kenneth has come out of the closet, we wish him happier and more free years ahead.
