(Update: The last date for linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar was on June 30, 2023. The government has also yet to issue any notification regarding the extension of the deadline. Therefore, according to the Income Tax Department's official guidelines, all PAN cards that were not linked to Aadhaar became inoperative from July 1.)
Linking your PAN card to your Aadhaar card is an important task that every Indian citizen needs to complete and the deadline for the same was on 30 June 2023, earlier it was 31st March 2023. The last date to link PAN with Aadhaar has been extended several times in the past by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
"In order to provide some more time to the taxpayers, the date for linking PAN & Aadhaar has been extended to 30th June 2023, whereby persons can intimate their Aadhaar to the prescribed authority for PAN-Aadhaar linking without facing repercussions. From 1st July, 2023, the unlinked PAN shall become inoperative with consequences. The PAN can be made operative again in 30 days, upon intimation of Aadhaar to the prescribed authority after payment of fee of Rs. 1,000." the Income Tax department tweeted recently.
Before 31 March 2022 linking PAN to Aadhaar was free and after that between 1 April 2022 and 30 June 2022 it was Rs 500. However, now you will have to pay a fee of Rs. 1,000 if link your PAN with Aadhaar by 30 June 2023. If you fail to do so your PAN will become inoperative from 1 July 2023.
Under the provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961(the ¡®Act¡¯) every person who has been allotted a PAN as on 1st July, 2017 and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar Number, is required to intimate his Aadhaar to the prescribed authority on or before 31st March, 2023, on payment of a prescribed fee. Failure to do so shall attract certain repercussions under the Act w.e.f. 1st April, 2023. The date for intimating Aadhaar to the prescribed authority for the purpose of linking PAN and Aadhaar has now been extended to 30th June, 2023.
According to reports, more than 51 crore PANs have already been linked with Aadhaar till date.

How to check PAN card and Aadhaar card linking status online:
Step 1: Visit the official Income Tax e-filing portal by using this link: https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
Step 2: On the left side of the page under Quick Link click on ¡®Link Aadhaar Status¡¯.
Step 3: After clicking on the Link Aadhaar Status you will be redirected to the next page where you have to enter your 10-digit PAN card number and 12-digit Aadhaar card. number.
Step 4: After clicking on ¡®View Link Aadhaar Status as highlighted in the picture below.
If your PAN card and Aadhaar card are already linked you will get the pop-up that shows "Your PAN AZXXXXXX7L is already linked to given Aadhaar 44XXXXXXXX41" as you can see in the picture below.
If your PAN card and Adhaar card are not linked then it will show "PAN not linked with Aadhaar. Please click on Link Aadhaar link to link your Aadhaar with PAN" as you can see in the picture below. Please take the required actions to link your PAN with Aadhaar before the deadline(31 March 2023).
If you already requested to link PAN and Aadhaar and it pending with UIDAI for validation, please check the status later.
If your Aadhaar card is linked with some other PAN or if your PAN is linked with some other Aadhaar card please contact the jurisdictional AO immediately to delink the both.
What will happen if do not link PAN-Aadhaar?
