Airbnb's New Work-From-Home Design Will Allow Employees To Work, Live In 170 Countries
In an email sent to all the employees by the CEO, Airbnb¡¯s design to live and work anywhere has five key features.
In a bid to make work more comfortable for employees amid a pandemic that fails to end, Airbnb will allow its employees to live and work almost anywhere around the world.
Fully embracing a remote work policy, Airbnb's new model has been designed to attract staff and ensure flexibility.
The San Francisco short-term-stay company said late Thursday that employees could work from the office, home, or during their travels to 190 countries under the new policy.
CEO Brian Chesky has outlined five key features of the new work-from-anywhere design.
In an email sent to all the employees by the CEO, Airbnb¡¯s design to live and work anywhere has five key features:
1. Airbnb employees can work from home or the office.
2. Airbnb employees can move anywhere in the country they work, and their compensation won¡¯t change
3. Airbnb employees have the flexibility to travel and work around the world.
4. We¡¯ll meet up regularly for team gatherings, off-sites, and social events as a company.
5. And we will continue to work in a highly coordinated way.
Staff will still have to meet in person for regular team meetings and events, CEO Brian Chesky said in a message to employees.
Salaries won't change if employees decide to move.
Employees who work temporarily in a different country will still need a permanent address for tax and payroll reasons, which involves a "mountain of complexities." Still, Chesky said the company is working on an open-source solution.
The new policy will put the company in a better position to hire and retain the best people by not ¡°limiting the talent pool to a commuting radius around our offices," Chesky said.
Remote work and flexibility ¡°will become the predominant way we all work ten years from now," he said.
Millions of people switched to working remotely during the pandemic to limit potential exposure to COVID-19.
Companies are beginning to ask those workers to come back to the office, at least on a hybrid basis, including other tech companies such as Facebook parent Meta and Microsoft.
Airbnb is a brand born in 2007 when two Hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home. Since then, Airbnb has grown to 4 million Hosts who have welcomed more than 1 billion guest arrivals across over 220 countries and regions.
