Diwali and Halloween 2024
The five-day Diwali celebration started with Dhanteras on October 29 this year and will wrap up with Bhai Dooj.
On Diwali, also called the "Festival of Lights," statues of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped. Rituals like Kuber Puja and Bahi-Khata Puja are also done.
The festival marks the legendary return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after his victory over Ravana, as per Hindu mythology.
Diwali falls on the 15th day of the Hindu month of Karthik, usually mid-October to mid-November.
On the other hand, Halloween is observed on October 31 every year and it originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.
For the Celts, this marked the end of the harvest season and the start of winter, a time when it was believed that the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, allowing spirits to roam the earth.
People would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming spirits.
With time, as Christianity spread, it became known as All Hallows' Eve, eventually evolving into Halloween, which today involves costumes, trick-or-treating, and various spooky festivities.
